What Is BDIX? BDIX vs IIG vs International Bandwidth Explained

If you live in Bangladesh you have seen "BDIX" on ISP packages, FTP servers and hosting plans. This guide explains what BDIX actually is, how it differs from IIG and international bandwidth, and why it matters when you choose hosting for a Bangladeshi website.

What is BDIX?

BDIX (Bangladesh Internet Exchange) is the country's first Internet Exchange Point (IXP). According to BDIX, it has operated since 2004 as a not-for-profit venture of the Sustainable Development Networking Foundation (SDNF), and its members include ISPs, mobile operators, telecom companies and content providers (over 110 peering members listed on its site).

An Internet Exchange Point is a shared switch where networks connect and swap traffic directly. Instead of every ISP paying to send local traffic abroad, they exchange it at BDIX.

How BDIX works

BDIX is a layer 2 exchange: members bring their own router, connect to the BDIX switch on a 100 Mbps, 1 Gbps or 10 Gbps port, and set up BGP peering with other members. To join, an organisation needs its own AS number and IP addresses from APNIC (BDIX technical description).

When a Grameenphone user opens a website hosted by a company that is also on BDIX, the request goes:

User → ISP → BDIX → hosting network → server, all inside Bangladesh.

Without a local exchange, the same request could travel to Singapore or beyond and back.

BDIX vs IIG vs international bandwidth

	BDIX	IIG / international bandwidth
What it carries	Traffic between networks inside Bangladesh	Traffic between Bangladesh and other countries
Who runs it	Internet exchange (BDIX) and its members	Licensed International Internet Gateway operators
Path	Local, short	Submarine cables and cross-border links
Typical latency for local users	Very low (single-digit ms to local servers)	Higher, depends on distance
Affected by cable cuts	No, for local traffic	Yes
Cost to ISPs	Low	Higher

That cost difference is why many ISPs advertise separate speeds: a high "BDIX speed" for local content and a lower international speed.

What BDIX means for websites

If your visitors are mostly in Bangladesh, hosting your website on a server connected to BDIX gives you:

• Faster first byte and page loads for local visitors
• Stability during submarine cable maintenance or cuts
• No downside for foreign visitors, who still reach the site over normal international routes

This is what "BDIX hosting" means. Plans and prices: BDIX hosting, BDIX VPS. Choosing a provider: best BDIX hosting in Bangladesh.

Other common uses of BDIX

• BDIX FTP and media servers: ISPs host movies, software and games on local servers so users can download at BDIX speed.
• Online gaming: local game servers give low ping.
• Content caches: large platforms place caches inside Bangladeshi networks so popular content is served locally.

How to check if something is on BDIX

1. Find the server's IP address (ask your host for a test IP).
2. Run ping <IP> from a Bangladeshi connection. Local servers usually answer in a few milliseconds.
3. Run tracert <IP> (Windows) or traceroute <IP> (Mac/Linux). If every hop stays on Bangladeshi networks, the traffic is local.
4. Repeat from mobile data and broadband, because peering differs between ISPs.

Common misunderstandings

• "BDIX makes any website fast." It removes distance. A heavy site with large images is still slow; see Core Web Vitals and page speed.
• "BDIX hosting does not work abroad." It does; foreign visitors just do not get the local speed advantage.
• "Every 'BDIX' label is real." Verify with ping and traceroute before you buy.

Bottom line

BDIX is Bangladesh's local internet exchange. Traffic that stays on it is faster and more stable than traffic that travels abroad. For any website whose audience is in Bangladesh, a server reachable through BDIX is the simplest speed upgrade you can make.

সাধারণ জিজ্ঞাসা (FAQ)

What is BDIX?

BDIX (Bangladesh Internet Exchange) is the country's first Internet Exchange Point, running since 2004 as a not-for-profit initiative of the Sustainable Development Networking Foundation. ISPs, mobile operators and content providers connect to it to exchange local traffic inside Bangladesh.

What is the difference between BDIX and IIG?

BDIX carries traffic between networks inside Bangladesh. IIG (International Internet Gateway) operators carry traffic between Bangladesh and the rest of the world over submarine cables and cross-border links. Local traffic over BDIX does not use international capacity.

Why is BDIX faster?

Traffic between two Bangladeshi networks travels a short local path instead of going abroad and back, so latency is much lower and it is not affected by international congestion or submarine cable cuts.

What is BDIX hosting?

BDIX hosting means your website runs on a server in Bangladesh that is reachable through BDIX, so visitors on Bangladeshi ISPs load it over the local exchange.

Do all ISPs in Bangladesh connect to BDIX?

Most major ISPs and mobile operators peer at BDIX or other local exchanges, but routing depends on each ISP's peering. That is why you should test speed from more than one connection.

Is BDIX speed the same as my internet package speed?

Many ISPs offer higher speeds for BDIX content than for international content, because local bandwidth costs them less. Your package details show both figures.
